Woodburning

Wood burning is the common name for Pyrography.

Pyrography is a technique used largely by the decorative craft artist to burn imagery in wood and leather. For the most part, wood burning has been confined to the illustration of wildlife and is especially used to detail features on wooden ducks such as their wings and plumage. Eagles, wolves and decorative designs are also frequently executed using this method.

Pyrography is defined as the art of “drawing with fire”.

Wood burning requires the use of an electric pen-like instrument with a hot tip. Queen uses an electronic burning system that allows her to use various burning tips and most importantly, control the temperature of the burning tool.

She prefers to burn at a high temperature, which increases both the darkness of the line and the speed in which she works. Wood burning is a very exacting and slow technique. The fastest speed is very, very slow compared to other mediums.

Queen has extended the technique of wood burning into the arena of the “fine” arts, creating works that speak to issues and themes beyond the animal kingdom, nature and decoration.

Her wood burnings are often combined with other media, such as inks, acrylic paints,
and watercolors. She has executed works that are wood burned and collaged with other
elements. Working in a variety of mediums, wood burning is Queen’s favorite.
